Having trouble falling asleep?
After a long day, you’re laying down trying to relax and you expect to soon fall asleep. Yet your mind is buzzing, eyes can’t close, and your body isn’t winding down to relax. If you’re having trouble sleeping, you’re not alone as sleep deficiency and sleep disorders are a common public health issue that do not get as much attention as they should. There are some shocking statistics from a health survey done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where they found “about 7–19 percent of adults in the United States reported not getting enough rest or sleep every day”. Nearly 40 percent of adults report falling asleep during the day without meaning to at least once a month. Also, an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans have ongoing sleep disorders” (National Heart Lung and Blood Institute).
Why Sleep is important?
We commonly accept that sleep is good for us and allows our body to recharge. Yet the full extent from the benefits of getting sleep is staggering. Getting a good amount of rest is imperative for balancing hormones, boosting the immune system, improving mental health and memory, recovering the body and so much more. From the National Health, Lung and Blood Institute, “sleep deficiency is linked to many health problems…”( National Heart Lung and Blood Institute).
How do we fall asleep?
Our bodies have a natural clock that creates a need for sleep and naturally light and darkness form different signals that make us awake and relaxed. At night your body releases melatonin when it gets dark and this begins to prepare you for sleep. As the sun rises, your body releases cortisol as it prepares to wake up. If you constantly lose sleep or don’t get enough daily sleep, your sleep loss can add up and compound. This in turn means you must make up all those hours you lost over the week.

Getting a consistent sleep pattern can be aided by keeping track of how many hours you get for a week and scheduling out how you can improve by making your bedtime 30 minutes earlier to start. As you work your way to a good number of hours, make sure you are in a consistent schedule waking up around the same time each morning and going to bed around the same time. You can find a sample sleep diary in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s “Your Guide to Healthy Sleep.” Also, avoid eating an hour before bed, exercise and bright artificial light from tv, phone or computer screens that can keep you up.
