A Simplified Guide to CBD Key Words

With the CBD industry being so new and unfamiliar, things can get a little confusing. We’re here to help you understand the science and terminology of the world of CBD. This is Green Gorilla’s glossary to help clear up any confusion around the most important terms related to CBD and what they mean.

Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The Endocannabinoid System, or ECS for short, is a biological system found within the human body as well as in all mammals and most vertebrates. The function of the ECS is to regulate homeostasis throughout the body. The ECS consists mainly of endocannabinoids, cannabinoid receptors, and enzymes.

Homeostasis

Homeostasis is another word for balance or equilibrium within an organism or system.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are compounds found within the body, as well as in plants such as hemp or cannabis, that interact with cannabinoid receptors and have therapeutic effects. Cannabinoids help keep your ECS, and therefore your whole body, functioning properly. Endocannabinoids are naturally produced by your body. Phytocannabinoids are found in plants. The two main endocannabinoids are Anandamide and 2-AG. The two most common phytocannabinoids are CBD and THC.

Cannabinoid Receptors

Cannabinoid receptors are cell receptors found throughout your body that are part of the ECS. They transmit information to cells to help them respond properly to changes in the environment. There are two types of cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found throughout your brain and nervous system. CB2 receptors are found in your immune system, digestive system, skin, and other organs.

Cannabis

Cannabis is a class of plants that includes both hemp and marijuana. Cannabis plants have been used for thousands of years for their medicinal effects. The main difference between hemp and marijuana is their CBD and THC content. Hemp contains high levels of CBD and less than 0.3% THC. Marijuana generally contains high levels of THC and much lower levels of CBD.

CBD

CBD is the most common cannabinoid found in hemp. It is non-psychoactive, which means that it does not create an intoxicating effect. CBD has many potential benefits for health and wellbeing.

THC

THC is the most common cannabinoid found in marijuana that produces its intoxicating psychoactive effects.

Terpenes

Terpenes are aromatic oils found in many plants that are responsible for a plant’s unique scent and effects. Terpenes have many therapeutic benefits. Terpenes are found in especially high concentrations in hemp and cannabis plants.

Whole Plant Extract

A whole plant extract refers to an extract made using the full spectrum of compounds found within a plant.

Entourage Effect

The entourage effect refers to the added therapeutic effects created by the combination of chemical compounds found in full-spectrum whole-plant hemp or cannabis.

Supercritical CO2 Extraction

Supercritical CO2 extraction is a clean, solvent-free method of extracting hemp using natural carbon dioxide.

Organic

Organic means something that is cultivated or produced without the use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or other artificial agents.
