How Can CBD Help My Dog?

The founders of Green Gorilla™ were first inspired to look into the benefits of CBD after they witnessed the near-miraculous effects CBD had on an aging dog. Now that the 2018 Farm Bill has effectively legalized hemp-derived CBD across the country, we’ve made it our mission to spread the word about how humans and dogs can use CBD’s benefits for better wellness.

Many pet owners have found they can use CBD for relief, sleep, and immune system support. Let’s dive into how CBD can help your dog just as well as it can their humans.

Can Dogs Use CBD?

Both humans and dogs—as well as many other animals—have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system is made of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system (the brain) and peripheral nervous system (throughout the body).

The ECS regulates many of the body’s essential functions, both physiological and cognitive. It regulates your immune system, mood, appetite, pain response, stress response, and sleep cycles. The ECS consists of three primary areas: endocannabinoids, endocannabinoid receptors, and enzymes that break the endocannabinoids down. To put it simply, think of it as a big communication system that lets different parts of your body report how they’re doing and react accordingly.

Cannabinoids found in hemp—like CBD, CBG, and THC—activate the receptors in the endocannabinoid system. This interaction can get incredibly complex, so we’ll stick to the basics. The ECS doesn’t always work perfectly, just like our cardiovascular and respiratory systems can sometimes act up. An imbalanced ECS poorly regulates your body’s reactions and rhythms. That’s where CBD comes in.

Many pet owners have discovered they can use CBD for dogs so that they function normally. CBD activates endocannabinoid receptors indirectly to help the body achieve homeostasis in response to internal or external fluctuations. Homeostasis is the optimal state of equilibrium and wellness in your body. It’s the end goal of anyone trying to alleviate their symptoms and achieve the best health they possibly can, which is exactly the life we want for our beloved pets.

How CBD Can Help Dogs

The amount of purposes the ECS has is why CBD can help dogs across so many symptoms and ailments. This one simple substance can help you and your dog on a neurological level throughout the body and mind. Here are some ways owners of dogs can use CBD’s benefits to their pet’s advantage:

  • CBD may help reduce stress from separation. Do you have a dog who whines and gets upset every time you leave the house or simply leave their sight? This irrational response to separation can be heartbreaking to witness, especially if you frequently have to leave them alone. CBD can help dogs stay calm and relaxed, even if you’re away.
  • You can use CBD for dogs in recovery. CBD can help inhibit pain responses on a neurological level. If your dog is suffering from chronic pain as a result of an injury, aging, or sore joints, CBD can help provide them with needed relief and help put a pep in their paws again.
  • CBD can help your dog sleep. Does your dog wake up at the slightest sound? Do you live in a city or a busy household where sounds and disruptions are unavoidable? If so, one of CBD’s best-known benefits for dogs is helping ease them into a deep, natural sleep. CBD helps regulate the body’s circadian rhythms, letting your dog sleep through the night and stay awake during the day.
  • CBD can help with inflammation and allergies. CBD has been frequently observed to aid in inflammation responses that cause severe allergic reactions in both humans and dogs. Dogs commonly suffer from allergies just like humans. CBD is a virtually risk-free way you can try to alleviate a sneezing, irritated, itchy pet when they return from a walk through pollen and grass.

Extra note: While CBD has been shown to be excellent for dogs, THC is not so helpful. Stray away from any cannabis or full spectrum CBD products with raw hemp or marijuana when you’re supplementing your pet. There is not enough research behind using THC for pets to support its use.

For this reason and many more, you should only use CBD that is intended for dogs. What’s healthy for humans is not always healthy for pets! (Think chocolate and raisins.)

Make Sure You Only Use Lab-Tested, Certified Organic CBD

You have to be extremely careful with the brand of CBD you purchase for your animal. The CBD industry is unregulated by the FDA, which means companies can often get away with claiming a product has more or better CBD than it actually has. In some cases, companies have been caught selling CBD products that contained no CBD at all. When it comes to these low-quality CBD products, at best you could get ripped off. At worst, you could risk harming your pet.

How do you find trustworthy CBD that can help your dog? Look at the lab reports. A third-party lab should provide a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for each CBD product you purchase. Green Gorilla™ takes this a few steps further, setting the highest standard of quality in the industry. We were the first USDA Certified Organic hemp CBD brand in the country, and we continue to be 100% farm-to-shelf organic today.

When it comes to helping your beloved dog live a long, happy life, we know you won’t make compromises on quality. Our certified organic pet CBD can help dogs live to the fullest. Try it out and see the difference it makes in your pet.
